Panel calls for probe of priest`s slaying

Aresolution calling for an investigation by the Philippine government and the U.S. State Department into the slaying of a Chicago Catholic missionary was approved Thursday by the City Council`s Committee on Intergovernmental Relations. Rev. Carl Schmitz, 70, was killed April 7 in the Philippine village of Bulol on Mindanao by a member of a Philippine paramilitary group who later boasted of the killing.

The committee, led by Ald. Roman Pucinski (41st), unanimously approved the measure at the urging of representatives of the missionary order of the Congregation of the Passion and by Father Schmitz`s relatives.
